Celebrating families

Lead Summary

On a gorgeous Veterans Day morning, Gretchen Hintz Wronka returned home to honor not only her father and his fellow veterans but also the people they left behind.“I recall the joy I felt when my oldest son, Peter, a sailor on the aircraft carrier USS Ranger sailed into San Diego harbor,” she said during her keynote address at the New Hampton Veterans Day observance on Friday. “He was safely home from the first Gulf War.”She paused for a moment and smiled, for Wronka knows — absolutely, positively understands — that not every veteran comes home. Her father, First Lt. Loren Hintz, perished when his P-47 was shot down on April 21, 1945, near the village of Bagnarola in northern Italy. He left behind his wife, a daughter and a son who would be born 39 days later. The wife was Gert Hintz, a legend in New Hampton after serving as the high school secretary for more than 3 1/2 decades. For the complete story see the 11/15/2016 New Hampton Tribune.
