Chickasaw boys rebound at the Border Battle

Lead Summary

Austin Flugum came right out and said it; he needed a game like Saturday.
So did the rest of his New Hampton teammates.
A day after dropping their second straight Northeast Iowa Conference game, the Chickasaws rebounded with a 54-33 victory over Schaeffer Academy in the annual Border Battle that was held at Luther College.
And Flugum was one big reason for the turnaround as the senior guard scored a game-high 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field, including a 4-for-6 day behind the 3-point line.
“For sure, I needed that, but then again, I think we all did,” Flugum said. “Almost all of us had big struggles shooting last week and we just needed to get going.”
New Hampton got going early as Tristan Sweitzer and Flugum each hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter as the Chickasaws raced out to a 15-4 lead, and Flugum scored New Hampton’s first seven points — hitting two free throws, making a steal that led to a layup and nailing a 3-pointer — to give New Hampton a 22-6 lead and the Chickasaws cruised from there.
