Chickasaw boys waste fast start in NEIC defeat

Lead Summary

The start was good … and that was about it for the New Hampton boys basketball team Friday night.
The Chickasaws jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the game’s first three minutes, and then the proverbial roof caved in as Oelwein used a 33-8 run over the next nine minutes to blow open the Northeast Iowa Conference game on its way to a 69-52 victory.
“We played our basketball for the game’s first four minutes, maybe it was three, and then I hate to say it but our team fractured a bit,” New Hampton coach Ryan Rausch said. “It was frustrating, to say the least. Nothing seemed to work.”
It was a night when frustration reigned for New Hampton.
The Chickasaws got some good looks in the first half and couldn’t convert. New Hampton’s 1-3-1 zone defense forced some turnovers but invariably it seems the Chickasaws would turn the basketball right back over. Oelwein was deadly from the outside, finishing the night with 11 3-pointers. And when the Huskies missed, too often New Hampton gave up an offensive rebound.
