Chickasaws win homecoming game over rivals

Lead Summary

New Hampton had plenty of reason to celebrate Friday night as the Chickasaws not only celebrated homecoming but came away with a 13-6 win over Waverly-Shell Rock.
The Class 2A Chickasaws took an early 7-0 lead on a Mason Lane to Drake Wemark 7-yard scoring pass, and New Hampton’s defense pitched a shutout in the first half.
But Class 3A Waverly-Shell Rock got on the board on a Payton Leonard 6-yard scoring run on the Go-Hawks’ first possession of the second half. But the Go-Hawks missed the extra-point kick and New Hampton still had a 7-6 lead.
The Chickasaws went up 13-6 on a drive that featured two outstanding catches by Wemark and a critical 13-yard screen pass to Carter Ferrie, who capped the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run with 7:59 remaining.
New Hampton snuffed out two Waverly-Shell Rock drives, and Brayden Anderson’s clutch tackle on a fourth-and-2 play may have been the biggest defensive play for the Chickasaws, who improved to 2-2.
The Chickasaws will host Forest City next Friday in both teams’ Class 2A, District 3 opener.
