Elmer R. Horney dies at 88

Elmer R. Horney, 88, passed away in New Hampton, on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 25, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Candraeah Carey officiating.  Interment will be at the New Hampton Cemetery with Military Honors being provided by New Hampton American Legion. A reception will follow at the First United Methodist Church in the Family Life Center.  Visitation will be held two hours prior to the memorial service at Conway-Markham Funeral in New Hampton.  In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to benefit the First United Methodist Church, 201 N. Locust Ave., New Hampton, IA 50659 or St. Croix Hospice of New Hampton, or of the donor’s choice.  Online condolences may be directed to www.conway-markhamfh.com.
Elmer was born on October 19, 1928 to William (Guy) Anderson Horney and Rose Ellen (Page) Horney. Elmer attended Beason High School (Illinois) and graduated in 1947. Upon completing high school and some carousing around, he enlisted in the United States Army on Dec. 5, 1950 and reached the rank of Corporal during his service from 1950 to 1952. Elmer was sent to Korea in 1951 and was wounded in action on Aug. 27, 1951, receiving the Purple Heart for his wounds. Elmer spent the rest of his military career in the hospital, recuperating from his wounds until his honorable discharge.
Elmer and Doris (Marquette), of West Union, were united in marriage on Feb.1, 1952 and celebrated 64 years together before Doris’ passing in 2016. Elmer and Doris made their first home together in West Union after his discharge from the military, later moving to Maynard, then to New Hampton.  Elmer worked in sales most of his adult life, working for Walkins Products, Ralston Purina, Gooch Feed Mill Corp., New York Life Insurance.  He also worked for the Sara Lee Corp., 9½ years before his retirement in 1993. He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served in all capacities of the local Board; Disabled American Veterans and American Legion.  Elmer enjoyed spending time playing cards, Cribbage, Euchre and Poker, along with outdoor activities, fishing, camping and hiking. With those skills he became Scoutmaster of Troop 48 from 1967 to 1972, where he enjoyed seeing many of his scouts attain the rank of Eagle Scout.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents Guy and Rose; wife Doris; great grandson, Dameon; brothers, James in infancy; Charles Edwin; and Everett Paul; sisters, Effie May and Edna Faye. He is survived by his daughters, Rosella Ann of Ankeny; Marilu Elaine Schwiesow and her husband Tom of New Hampton, and a son, David Eugene Horney and his wife Colleen of Sheridan, Wyo; grandchildren, Jessica Horney of Ankeny; Joshua Schwiesow and his wife Alyse of Mason City; Danielle Ferris and her husband Tim of Springfield, Ill and Alyssa Yeik and her husband Travis of Bozeman, Mont.
Conway-Markham Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
