Rallying for a milestone

The fact of the matter is that it didn’t look like Al Frost was going to get that milestone win last Thursday night.
The Huskies had beaten Eagle Grove and West Fork earlier in the night to give the veteran coach 399 career wins, but Northwood-Kensett looked like it was going to spoil the party as the Vikings raced out to a 30-0 lead in the final meet of a quadrangular held at Eagle Grove.
But the Huskies got back on track with a Derik Downing pin at 170 pounds and roared back to claim a 39-36 victory and give their coach a milestone victory. Frost, who began his head coaching career at Plainfield in 1989 and took over as Nashua-Plainfield coach in 1993, is just the 15th coach in Iowa history to win at least 400 dual meets. The three wins in Eagle Grove gave the Huskies a 7-2 record this season and upped Frost’s career record to 400-181-6.
“I’m so old,” he said with a laugh, “that I remember the days when a tie was just a tie.”
His team had to work to get him that win, though.
After Downing’s pin, Justice Palmier got a fall at 195 to cut the deficit to 30-12, but the Vikings got a victory at 220 before Nashua-Plainfield closed the meet with five straight wins.
