Turkey Valley tops Warriors in blowout; advances to state quarterfinals

After falling to Rockford in the first round of the eight-player playoffs in 2018, Turkey Valley was able to get their revenge on Friday night, as they defeated Rockford 52-8 in the opening round of the postseason.

The Trojans jumped out to a 12-0 lead after two Ethan Leibold touchdown runs on quarterback sneaks, but the Warriors answered with a touchdown of their own on the final play of the first quarter, as Will Buschbaum scampered into the end zone on a long run play of 65 yards that brought the score to 12-8.

However, from that point forward, it was all Turkey Valley. 

Leibold connected with Dylan Elsbernd for an 11-yard passing touchdown at the start of the second quarter. Rockford went three-and-out on the ensuing possession and tried a fake punt on fourth down that the Trojans sniffed out and stopped.

This set up Turkey Valley in good field position with the ball at the Rockford 19-yard line. They made the most of this opportunity, marching the football to the one-yard line. Leibold punched it in from there to make it 26-8.

The Trojans added one more score before halftime to extend their advantage to 34-8.

Turkey Valley received the football to to start the third quarter On the kickoff, Eli Reicks found a hole and dashed past the Warriors’ kickoff team to return it for a touchdown to make it 42-8.

Rockford was unable to gain any momentum in the second half, as the Trojans eventually cruised to the 44-point win.

With this victory, the Trojans will advance to the state quarterfinals, where they will host HLV. This contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Friday.
