Summer Rec program has gone smoothly thus far

With only a few short weeks left of the Nashua-Plainfield Summer Rec softball/baseball program, the new committee couldn’t be happier about how the season has gone.
Eleven parents and N-P High School Baseball coach Levi Miller make up the committee. One committee member, Sara Scobee, said they decided early on, this program was going to be about the children. “Everyone is working together and keeping a positive attitude.” It obviously shows as they had record numbers this year with 193 kids participating in softball and baseball and a total of thirteen teams. Scobee said they have a great bunch of parents who stepped up to be on the committee. “Each parent has something different to offer. Some are more into the coaching side and others the administrative side. They all have special gifts and talents they bring to the program,” she said.
Scobee also added that they are still in the Shell Rock Valley League. There were some concerns about that particular league not having enough teams but Scobee said the coaches set up games with other teams that aren’t in the league. “It works out fine,” she said. The K-2 grades play each other. There are four K-2 boys teams and one K-2 girls team. All the 3-7 grade teams travel.
The committee has replaced all the broken equipment. The diamonds have been cleaned up and the Nashua concession stand has been painted. Registration cost goes to uniforms so the only fund raising done is through the concession stands. Scobee said this year the local café in Nashua, The Tangled Root, has been making smoked pulled pork for the concession stand and that has been a big hit.
High school students that volunteer to help summer rec get hours for their community service program, Silver Cord. They are still looking for volunteers for the concession program.
